Explosion protection in industrial plants using pressure‑based detection for reaction trigger
The application:
Explosion‑prone processes are common in many industries – whether in silos, dryers, pneumatic conveying systems or dust‑laden production environments. Modern explosion protection systems rely on fast, reliable pressure detection to identify the onset of an explosion and trigger automatic mitigation measures. Endress+Hauser sensors play a central role in such solutions by enabling rapid detection of early pressure rises.
The challenge:
In many industrial processes, combustible dusts, gases or vapors can form an explosive atmosphere when mixed with oxygen. Once ignited, this atmosphere can lead to an abrupt pressure increase and flame propagation, resulting in significant damage and endangering personnel.
Because explosions can propagate through connected ducts or vessels, a comprehensive and coordinated protection concept is essential. Systems, which detect pressure rises in early-stage phase are required to activate counter measures that no explosions can occur.
Such counter measures are:
- Chemical explosion suppression – extinguishing the developing fireball in its earliest stage
- Explosion isolation – preventing flame fronts from spreading into adjacent equipment
- Explosion venting / flameless venting – controlled release of pressure, with or without flame arresting depending on the installation environment
Our solution:
Capacitive-ceramic pressure sensors or transducers from the Sensors & Components portfolio are used as early‑stage explosion detection sensors. They monitor the process for rising pressure rates, enabling the protection system to respond within milliseconds.
When the sensor detects a rapid pressure increase, the explosion protection controller initiates a series of counter measures. Thanks to their fast response and reliability, our capacitive ceramic pressure sensors are integral components of modern explosion protection architectures. The chemical robustness of the ceramic membrane is further a required characteristic when extinguishing is used in the process.
The latest capacitive-ceramic products are in compliance with international safety and certification standards as basis for further explosion protection approvals. Further the modular sensor architecture offers to combine sensors when redundant systems are a requirement
Either used as sensor or transducer Endress+Hauser Sensors & Components will handle the user’s requirements in the best viable way. The interdisciplinary team from development, product management and sales supports with over three decades of experience from the product idea to the series introduction.
